Sixth graders will encounter a wealth of knowledge in this year of school. You can help your child succeed, by designating an area in your house for homework. Help you child prepare the space over summer. Keep a dictionary and reference books near his study area so he can look up words, subjects and symbols he doesn't know or fully understand, helping with comprehension. Studies show that misunderstood words block the road to learning. During the summer your student should be reading at least thirty minutes every day.  Read a magazine, a book, a newspaper. Turn off the television and computer games. Let your child be creative with his own imagination. Have your student keep a journal or write a story about their summer adventures.  Ask your child to do simple real-world tasks like calculating the tip when you go out to eat or filling out an application. Make sure they know the correct way to write their mailing address. Go to mass with your child and practice prayer at home. Take time to have fun and relax over the summer, so you will be ready to learn in August.
