
By third grade, a student should read fluently. When reading with your child check to make sure that your child comprehends what they are reading. Ask your child to tell you what the story was about, who were the characters, and what happened in the story. The dollar store sells workbooks you can use over the summer. Better yet utilize your local library or bookstore. Take your child to the library every week. Allow them to check out at least three or four books a week, magazines, or whatever they are excited about reading. Be an example to your child. Let your child see you reading a book, newspaper, or magazine from time to time.By the end of 2nd grade, your child should be able to give "quick" answers to addition and subtraction flash cards Give your child a journal. Allow your child to write in their journals everyday. Where they went today or anything that they choose to write about. Allow your child to see you writing. Have your child help you with everyday writing such as grocery lists and "things to do" list. Don’t forget to take your child to mass on Sunday, and receive the Holy Eucharist.
